HOW TO ENTER

Who can enter the competition?

  • Students from maintained and independent schools and colleges
  • University students
  • Adult-learners
  • Heritage learners from Russian-speaking families

How to enter?

Each contestant may enter only one essay.

Please note that students may not register themselves, but can only be registered by a teacher or lecturer.

To make an entry teachers must complete the entry form and send it along with the essay to entry@russianessaycompetition.co.uk by 9 March 2012.

Entries should be made under the following categories:

:CATEGORIES

Category 1. Non-heritage learners at Schools and Colleges who do not speak Russian with their families at home.

Level 1. Beginners level.

This is mostly ab initio students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 30-40 contact hours of instruction in Russian .

Level 2.  Post-Beginners level (equivalent of Key stage 3).

Students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 100 contact hours of instruction in Russian.

Level 3. Intermediate level (equivalent of Key stage 4).

Students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 200 contact hours of instruction in Russian. This is mostly school students working towards their GCSE level.

Level 4. Advanced level (equivalent of Key stage 5).

Students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 400 contact hours of instruction in Russian. This is mostly school students working towards their A-level.

Category 2. Non-heritage learners at Universities and Adult learners who do not speak Russian with their families at home.

Level 1. Beginners level.

This is mostly ab initio students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 30-40 contact hours of instruction in Russian .

Level 2. Post-beginners level (equivalent of year 2 students with no previous exposure to Russian).

Students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 100 contact hours of instruction in Russian.

Level 3. Intermediate level (equivalent of year 1 and year 2 students with previous exposure to Russian).

Students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 200 contact hours of instruction in Russian.

Level 4. Advanced Level (equivalent of year 3 and year 4 students).

Students who at the time of the essay contest will have had up to 400 contact hours of instruction in Russian.

Category 3. Heritage learners who speak Russian with their families at home.

Level 1.

This is mostly younger children of up to 7 years old.

Level 2.

Heritage learners of  8-10 years who have NOT attended school in Russia or the former Soviet Union and have learnt reading and writing skills after emigration.

Level 3.

Heritage learners of 11 years and over who have NOT attended school in Russia or the former Soviet Union and have learnt reading and writing skills after emigration.

Level 4.

Heritage learners of 11 years and over who have attended school in Russia or the former Soviet Union.
